We’ve tried many interesting coffee and tea drinks in our day, but few can match the iced blueberry matcha latte for pure intrigue. We can’t help but feel as if the first person to make a blueberry matcha latte settled on the ingredients by pulling random flavors out of a hat, but, amazingly, it works!
In this article, we’re going to teach you a simple recipe for making a blueberry iced matcha latte at home. It’s surprisingly easy and only requires a few ingredients and about ten minutes of working time. The hardest step is making blueberry sauce, and even that isn’t very difficult. Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte Recipe
- Small saucepan (for making the blueberry sauce)
- Kitchen strainer
- Small bowl
- ¼ cup Blueberries
- ¼ cup Water
- 1 tsp Matcha powder
- 2 tbsp Water room temperature
- oz Your favorite kind of milk
Make blueberry syrup.
- In a small saucepan, heat the blueberries over medium heat. As the blueberries start to break down, add water slowly in increments, stirring each time you add some. The goal is to let the sauce thicken by degrees. Crush the berries with the back of a spoon to accelerate the process and incorporate as much juice as possible.
- After you’ve added all the water, remove the sauce from heat.
- Strain the sauce to remove the skin and other solid remnants.
- Let the sauce cool before storing it in the refrigerator in a sealed jar.
Make the blueberry iced matcha latte.
- Combine the matcha powder with 2 tablespoons of room temperature water. Whisk the mixture vigorously until it reaches a thick, smooth consistency. This takes some practice, so don’t worry if it doesn’t come out perfect the first time.
- Add the blueberry sauce to the bottom of a glass. This recipe makes enough sauce for one latte, but you can adjust the amount to taste.
- Add ice to the glass and slowly pour your milk of choice over it.
- Slowly pour the matcha over the milk. If you pour slowly enough, the matcha should sit on top of the milk in its own layer.
Tips and Tricks
- You might be tempted to mix the blueberry with the matcha powder, but you should resist the urge if you want the most café-like blueberry iced matcha latte. Part of matcha’s appeal is the thick, foamy texture, and you’ll lose it if you stir the blueberry sauce, milk, and matcha together. However, we encourage you to try it if you want to and compare both methods yourself.
- Whisking matcha is an art form and can be frustrating for first-timers. Matcha-lovers have special whisks that make the process easier, but you can use a regular kitchen whisk with similar results. Speed is key to get the airy quality most people are after.
- You can make this drink with any kind of milk you like, but we recommend almond milk and oat milk. Unlike traditional lattes that feature frothed milk, this recipe only uses regular milk. Almond milk and oat milk are delicious but notoriously difficult to froth, so we recommend taking advantage of this unfrothed latte recipe to enjoy them.
- If you have a sweet tooth, you can add sugar to the blueberry sauce while you’re heating it. Start slowly and only add more in subsequent recipes once you’ve had the opportunity to taste the sauce. Blueberries contain enough sugar to satisfy most people and adding more sugar right off the bat is unnecessary.
- To get the layered effect where the matcha sits atop the milk on its own, pour the matcha extremely slowly and try to spread it out evenly over the milk’s surface. If you have trouble with the matcha sinking through the milk and blending, you can try pouring it over the back of a spoon. Bartenders use this trick to float different alcohols in layered cocktails.
